Whats the point to have linux on ps3?

Can someone please share the pros and cons of having linux for an os on the ps3? I've never really understood why...

Do you have a computer??? if the answer is yes then Linux on PS3 can do all your computer does, except 3D games (In Linux, access to the RSX graphics card is restricted).

Emulators, Firefox, email, instant messengers, Open Office suite... all is available at your fingertips!!! Pretty cool?!?! and all that out of the box, no modding required! Props to Sony for that!
