setting 1680x1050 possible?

is it possible to set the res to 1680x1050 under linux? this is the native res of my monitor, so it would be nice to use this mode (the ps3 should quite handle it though it can handle 1080p as well)

I have monitor with same specs and I'm running 720p. From Linux install info you can use any of these:

Code:
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WSXGA%2B 1680x1050 is WSXGA+ so the simple answer to your question would be no ;-)

The kernel probably has to be rebuilt to support the new resolution.
This was the same with PS2 Linux. It could support different resolutions, you just had to add them in the Kernel.

AFAIK 1080p means 1920x1080 so cutting 15 lines botom and top would hardly be enough. It would need to cut 120 pixels left and right ;-) Or resize.

I am running 720p on such monitor just fine. The idea with kernel recompilation is interesting although I think this is more of a X server responsibility...

I don't know if it's impossible, but isn't the video RAM designed for specific resolutions? It occurs to me now that that may be the eDRAM of the 360, but if anyone could clear this up it would be great as I'm planning on getting a ps3 in the next few months and also have a (Dell 2007fpw) that supports 1680*1050 and it definitely won't scale to 1080. Tried with my ps3 at home (siblings keep that). It mentions nothing on Wikipedia so I might just be making it all up. Thanks!
