I thought a couple of people said they can write to their NTFS formatted external drive.
I guess it isn't too important at the moment - but it will be nice to have eventually.
After I posted, I saw one of your posts in another thread - I saw you simply formatted your external drive with ext2(3?), so a quick google search turned up that ext2fs driver. So I have since formatted my 250gig drive as ext3. Though you lose a bit of space ... I chose a cluster per sector of 4 (using partitionmagic from the pc). I wasn't too sure what options to use, I found a lot of very unspecific information. I even tried to reformat it from linux, using the mke2fs command, but that just made it unmountable (I used the -T largefile4 option). So I reformatted it once more from windows using partitionmagic.
Anyway, I'm good to go now. I'm backing up some large files to it from the BluRay drive, and I'll see how it goes. And then I still have to get vlc working. I also havent checked the sound either - I only have the tos cable hooked up, and on the initial YDL install, the sound test for left, right, center only worked for center and I didn't hear the left or right tone. But the fact that sound came out seemed like a good sign to me .. lol .. but that's not a topic for this thread.
Thanks for the response though.

no probs... yeah i have had excellent success using partition magic and creating a linux partition...has been very stable with really large files and moving them fast on the pc side .
you are right, will be very cool the day we can play our streams via a linux player like powerdvd...i was under the impression though...much like the way the xmb kills ac3 streaming, running linux, graphic output is gonna be weak.

I guess I haven't read enough, but I didn't see anyone mention a subpar picture quality when using their linux ps3 to play back hd content in vlc (or whatever) - though there doesn't seem to be an overwhelming amount of ps3'ers doing it yet. But I have been wondering about exactly that - and I was going to let my own eyes be the judge.
As for ac-3 on sony's xmb, I wasn't aware of any issues - though I've only watched a few BluRay's, I wasn't impressed by the sound, but I'm only using toslink and didn't notice anything wrong either. But I've never been overly thrilled with normal 5.1dd anyway, and looking forward to getting a new receiver (w/hdmi) anyway.
But I don't think that is what you are talking about - are you referring to avi's (or whatever) that have an ac3 track? I've not even tried playing anything other than BluRay disc's in my ps3 yet, so I wasn't aware of that.

it will be cool if it gets done, but from what i understand, sony made sure linux was controlled tightly hardware-wise
i am in the same boat...just waiting for hdmi 1.3 to be implemented...just try and play a HD .mpg (one of the ripped blurays) file with an .ac3 track and you'll only get "DD" not DD 5.1...i end up just cranking it up and letting the sound bounce off the walls...the video is right there though, just audio is crippled
a normal bluray plays fine

Ok, so if I get this straight you've succeeded in mounting BD/BRD/PS3games in YDL on the PS3, right (pls correct me if I'm wrong)?
So isn't it possible to mount a PS3game image (while emulating a PS3-type-BD-drive) under any OS ran on a PC (i.e. Windows/Linux), after which you somehow (i.e. network settings/PS3proxy software) make the PS3 able to access this drive and (more importantly) read the image (bypassing any BD security programs)?
Pls excuse me if I'm asking stupid questions here, I got my PS3 2 days ago and haven't messed around with it much yet (other than getting and installing *.pkg files from my PC onto my PS3).
Just trying to think along with y'all though.

hmmmm ... I thought DD was DD5.1? Dolby Digital is 5.1, or am I missing something?
My receiver only sees the vlc digital audio as standard stereo (which may or may not contain the normal old dolby surround info). But Nero Showtime shows me that the audio track is indeed Dolby Digital 6 channel, and the video at 1920x1080 (and that's the other thing about vlc on my pc and my ps3 linux - the video doesn't seem to show at 1920x1080 when I set it to 100% - I have to go full screen even on my 1680x1050 laptop screen in order for it to fill the screen).
On the other hand, my backedup m2ts files look stellar on my plasma when I plug my plasma into my laptop and use Nero Showtime 3 (I've tried comparing to the original disc, and I wouldn't be able to tell you which was which) ... so I'm going to use my home pc to watch my backed up m2ts files from now on (once I finish building it this week).

Hopefully, someday. Right now there is no way to mount/emulate/whatever to the ps3 normal sony/xmb operating system. Check out the other ps3 forums - there is a good sticky on the Swiss Army Knife (SAK) and also the post/sticky in the ps3 BRDGen forum.

No problem. And just to be clear, since I see I didn't mention it in my response, and you did ask ... Yes, you can back up all the files off of a PS3 game disc or a BluRay movie disc. Either by dumping the whole iso/img file (using the linux dd command or the SAK utility which doesn't require linux) or by simply dragging and dropping whatever files you want right off of the disc using the procedure outlined in this thread.
I'm not sure if anything at all can be done with the game files at the moment, but I don't think so - I've never been much of a gamer, so I haven't delved too far into those discussions. But for the movie files, you can read hacked2123's Blu-ray back-up thread/sticky in this forum.

hacked2123, Can UDF 2.5 Support work on Fedora 6? I installed Fedora 6 in the PS3 already and didn't want to switch YDL. Tks.

I don't know you could always try it yourself. Follow the directions but you have to download the kernel native to YDL6 and try using the old patch file for it. If it works it will work, if it doesn't work you haven't messed anything up, you can still boot back to the other kernel. (I would try it, but I am happy with what I got, and don't want to risk having to do it again)
