can games be dumped with any other smaller version of linux? fedora iso is awfully big!

Yes they can, but the easiest way to dump games though is with SAK... no Linux install required.

use the 2nd one but you need to mount the external drive. I'm new with Linux too but was successful using the following steps:

1) First run, fdisk -l to find the drive partition
2) mkdir /mnt/exthdd
3) then #mount /dev/sdc1 (if that's what reported on the fdisk) /mnt/exthdd
4) dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/mnt/exthdd/ps3disc.iso
Now the external drive needs to be formatted ext3 (which is what I had done)

But what if the external drive is FAT32 which will not store file size >4G. Would someone know how to split using DD command?

BTW, SAK didn't work for me, that's why I used the above steps.
