DLNA Media Server on Linux for PS3 streaming

    Hi everyone!

I am very happy with the introduction of the video streaming capabilities for the PS3. For me that was the only feature that xbox has that was missing in my PS3. Now I can say, with out doubt, that PS3 is a real killer for xbox.

I just decided to open this new thread to see if other Linux experts know of a good and easy to use software in Linux that is DNLA compactible and there for, can be use to stream video, music and pictures to the PS3.

So far I tried gmediaserver and the documentation is not too clear. I was able to start it and was able to see it in the ps3 but when try to access the folders where the video are it gave some weir errors and in the ps3 it say no file found.

Other software that I came alone googling was mediatomb and linuxMCE (Linux Media Center). At the time of writing this post I haven't try this two software yet. I was wondering if other people with more Linux experience in the subject can share with the rest of us their ideas and knowledge.

BTW, I tried to use the windows media player and it doesn't seems to work with MP4, TS, MPEG and MKV video formats. In case you are trying any media server and you can not see it in your PS3, try to open the port 49152 in your router and/or firewall.

Thanks for reading this post and happy video streaming.

Digitalboi thanks for sharing your experience with mediatomb. I think I will try it tonite when I get home on my Fedora core 6 pc. Btw, do you have an idea of resource consumption in linux by mediatomb when streaming? My pc is not too new and I was wondering if it can handle it.

I tried gmediaserver and the files were visible on the PS3 but all claimed to be the whole file type.

I tried mediatomb and all was well. One thing to note is that all this DLNA stuff requires a multicast network address set up on your linux box. Mediatomb does this for you, but you need to edit /etc/defaults/mediatomb to enable it as described in the manual. Otherwise, it will run but your PS3 won't see it.

I've used mediatomb to and It's ok. Biggest problem I see is the lack of transcoding. I'm specially thinking about xvid and x264.

Maybe someone knows of a good transcoding solution for GNU/Linux? Twonkyvision maybe?
