Changing Hdd's between 2 PS3 consoles

Is it possible to change the hdd's between 2 PS3 consoles, and boot Linux?

I have found that:

- If you try to hook a ps3 hdd to another ps3, and try to boot in ps3 menu, then... it will ask you to format the disk.

- If you try to hook a ps3 hdd to another ps3, (both disks have ydl 5.0 preinstalled) and try to boot Other Os, then the system freezes at kboot search.*

I would like to boot the hdd of another ps3 console in mine, and try figure out what are the diferences between the 2 hdd's. Also, the most interesting part would be, to boot ps3 menu of another console to yours....

* this needs a small trick to do, else the system will freeze...

I have a hdd from a v1.32 pal/dev ps3 console, and I want to boot it in one of my consoles (v1.32us, v1.54jap, v1.60pal) The hdd that I wish to boot has 2 partitions (ps3, ydl 5.0), and if I put it in my v1.54jap ps3 and boot linux, it stucks to kboot check...

I am thinking to hotswap hdds, after passing the kboot check from the original one, but I am afraid not to damage anything... Do you know any special command that I can use, before I try the risky way?

it probably has to do w/ them being different firmware versions. the firmware probably installs stuff (probably the PS3 operating system) on the HD when it is initially setup and during firmware upgrades.. and i guess they aren't compatible from firmware to firmware.

i bet if you swapped hard drive from two identical systems (both running same exact firmware) it would work fine.
