What is the function of 'Mem Patch' option?

I'm using Gaia rc9 with Hermes V4b on my chip right now. So can anyone tell me what exactly does 'Mem patch' option actually help with respect to the games? Could someone please explain this in layman terms, without the use of tech jargon?

I believe the mem patch was left in for jailbreakers that are on a lower payload, it was mainly used around the Hermes v2 v3 payload for use on games with controller issues, but I'm not Drizzt (creator of Gaia) he could probably answer this better than I could.
