using the drive out of a 40g in a 60g... will it work? i'm buying a 60gb with a broken laser, and in the meantime while i buy the laser i was wondering if i could use the drive out of my 40g.

You can replace the Blu-ray drive laser, but not the drive itself as it is keyed to the PS3's motherboard. Here is a guide that may be of use:
