Upgrading firmware on jailbroken ps3 help?

hey, i have jailbroken ps3 on one of older firmwares, 3.42 iirc. i want to play online, and from what i read not possible without updaitng firmware to 3.6.

can i just unplug usb i used, and update firmware via ps3 prompts without bricking my system since it's been jailbroken, or do i need to uninstall/format ps3 hdd first?

also if i need to format, how do i do that?

Edit: well i'm inpatient, formatted it via settings > system settings > format utility, then updated it by letting ps3 update firmware itself. all seems to be well, just getting back on mw2 at the moment.

oh yeah you may want to backup your game data cuz lost all my solo gameplay stuff.. hope this helps someone else cheers!
