Is it not possible to take a 2.5"sata disk, throw on a sata to ide converter, connect it to a PS2 (yes PS2). use the PS2 to format it, remove it and connect to your PC either via IDE (using the adapter/converter) or via SATA and use PS2Handiness to transfer the data?

The PS3 should theoretically be able to read a PS2 filesystem since it creates a PS2 partition itself on the harddisk for PS2 games.
All we need is the developer to allow copying of directories rather than images.

In theory, i think this should work...
