PS3 Blank screen help?

I Have a friends slim ps3 who tried to carry out an update and whilst doing so screen went blank and has stayed blank since, i have no idea what update this was, also it was not hacked in any shape or form and he has gone offshore now so cannot get hold of him, tried to get into the recovery mode, but will not and screen stays blank. Although i a noob when it comes to ps3 side of things, have been into the xbox360 scene for some time, i would be grateful if someone could help us out here,thanks. Share
