i mean, technically possible for devs to add support for the mkv contrainer? i know you can remux matroska to vobs or just extract the video/audio to mp4 but it's a pain for 1000's of files.

It is possible, if somebody creates a good media player. There will be one in the future, undoubtedly.

coolio does someone need to do that though - create a media player? i mean, the PS3 already supports what's in the mkv contrainer - namely h/x.264 video (usually) and ac3/AAC/mp3 audio. it just needs a splitter so it can understand the mkv file right?

This is more of a request than a question, but as snoekie said now that the PS3 is unlocked anything is possible so it's just a matter of time before it happens.

On that, I am going to close this thread as no more help can be given until a release arrives.
