New laser-eye in PS3... how to recognize them?

I read in a greek site that Sony changed the Laser-eye in the newer models of PS3, due to its high failure rate. The older models had one eye for all formats (CD/DVD/Blu-Ray) and the newer has an eye for CD/DVD and a different one for Blu-Ray.

If this is true, is there anyway to know if my PS3 has the newer eye without opening the PS3? Maybe from the serial?
