Migrating old PS3 drive to new PS3 help?

My old PS3 broke (lovely RLOD) and I caved in and bought a new one. However I'd like to use the hard drive it had into the new one. I thought I could get away with just putting the old drive in the new PS3 without any repercussions. Turns out, the PS3 doesn't recognize it. I'd really like to use it, but it seems like I can't without having a system update reformatting it.

Is there any way to get the old hard drive working on the PS3?

Short of the old console working - alas you can not, as it needs to be on and working to do a system data transfer.
