will some day try to mess with system updates on our PS3, is there anyway of restricting this from him, or do I have to set the system to not connect online when he logs in?

hi and welcome yes is one way.. you can create a restrict account in psn.
first you create a master account and then create it or you do not save your password into ps3.

yea i think there is, but i think u need the latest firmware u have to make a sub account.
