The diode is part of the laser, so it may be covered in them... not sure though as I didn't sit and watch them all.

It is much easier to replace the laser assembly, one static discharge and the diode is dead, plus they have to be fit correctly. When assembled in the factory they are set in a jig to ensure proper placement. Doing this by hand would be almost impossible.
