Hard drive failure possibly help?

I'm getting failures in transfers from usb or ftp intermittently and i just replaced the factory 80gb with a 250gb from a laptop.. with the 80 i saw some solid transfer rates of 10MB/sec now its 1.5MB with the other HD and failing halfway through. The hard drive was already suspect and i'm just curious what are you guys typically seeing in transfers from usb or ftp?

I generally get around 30Mb/s with my gigabit ethernet connection. Sometimes though if a game has lots and lots of small files, the transfer takes ages and the speed is reduced to a crawl.
