Function USB-Mode in MultiMAN help?

Can anyone explain me who the USB-Mode in MultiMAN works. I know that it helps to copy games via FTP. But I want to understand WHAT this function does! Does it change rights via CHMOD or something else? It would be nice when its a little bit more technical.
