What is the deal with firmware? What is it and what is it used for?

Basically firmware is what gives the ps3 it's features and the operation it can do like mp3 capability etc, it kinda tells the ps3 what to do and with upgrades they can add more features that the ps3 will do, firmware is very important of the operation of the ps3, without the firmware the ps3 wouldn't be able to do much.

It's a computer program which is embedded in a hardware device. A firmware is something between software and hardware (executed by a chip and linked to hardware).
