Question [Answered] Is Backward Compatibility Possible on a 40GB PS3?

Yes, I bought a PS3 when they first came out.

    I bought the 40GB model because I didn't have $1000 spare.

I have never really tried playing a PS2 game on my PS3 but I was just wondering if it is possible or not?

I heard it misses something called the emoticon chip that makes PS2 unplayable.

Well, you could try one to be certain, but an easy way to tell without trying one is to check how many USB ports it has on the front... if it's got (2) then it won't support PS2 games, but if it has (4) then it will.

Also, if you go to PS3 official website, they have a link at the bottom of the PS3 page for b/c. It explains pretty good which units are b/c and which not.
