I bought a 40GB PS3 with 3.41 firmware for cheap ($50) off some guy because it could no longer read discs. As it turns out, it can't read blu-ray discs, but can read CD/DVD no problem. After taking it apart, I've found that it uses the dual lens style of laser.Sponsored Links
What's strange to me is that when I put in a blu-ray, it spins up and I can see the blue laser light on the disc. The drive tracks back and forth and appears to be trying to refocus the laser. Usually it'll try to do this for a minute or more, but every once in awhile it tries for about 10 seconds and gives up.
Anyway, I was hoping that someone with experience replacing PS3 lasers could comment on this. Is it normal for the blue laser to still light up when it's defective, or could something else be wrong?
