SSD vs. HDD for internal storage devices

SSD=Solid State Drive = replacement for internal HDD?

Does anyone know if a SSD will work inside of the PS3 instead of a HDD? I don't see why it wouldn't work, but it's a little expensive to try.

Does anyone know if they will work for sure? Has anyone seen any read/write times? I was told seek time is immediate, but I can't confirm.

Using a SATA to CompactFlash adapter, you could make a cheap 16GB SSD for under $100-- However any minor performance gains in access times would be offset by price, lack of capacity, and slow read-speeds(9-18MB/second, versus up to 50MB/second with a SATA 3.5" drive).

So it would seem the only current benefit would be heat and write times. The heat factor I'm interested in, but I, myself, would rather have slower write and faster read times. Takes more than twice as long to read... At least the technology has some room grow?

There is minimal heat using CF/SSD technology- no moving parts to generate heat.

True SSD drives are faster (Read- 60MB/s, Write 45MB/s), but their cost is incredibly high.
8GB, $240 USD
16GB, $340 USD
32GB, $570 USD
64GB, $1,240 USD.

So it is possible, but VERY expensive.

You forgot the biggest drive-

256 GB for $7,677.16 SATA (the IDE is $110 cheaper)

The newest SSD drives delivers write speeds at 120 MB/s and read speed about the same (~110MB/s). I would love to get one of those installed into my PS3!

There's a lot of sweet stuff with SSD drives; the low heat generation, no noise, nice access times and transfer speeds. Also, the fact that the transfer rates are stable, not like a ordinary mechanical drive that have a rollercoast transfer rate with big differences, ranging from 10-25MB/s read/write at an ordinary 2.5" drive...

Unless you are rich or just love to throw away money, I wouldn't get an SSD drive. Wait until current IDE and SATA drives become obsolete and SSD's are the norm. Of course, not everybody will want to wait a decade so to each their own.

SSD on PS3? For what? SSD is needed in portable devices or in devices that needs real speed. Even a low-cost hdd will be good in ps3, i think.

SSD costs too much for using it with the ps3, you dont carry your ps3 through the whole world it has one place so you dont need a super solid Flash Space!

The prices are so high at the moment my PS3 works with my SATA very well.
