I currently have a 60 gig drive in my ps3. I have backed this up onto an external drive. If i was to put a 250 gig drive in and add an extra partition for linux (to run mame) would i be able to restore my origional backup ?

yes you can.
when you install your backup into hdd ps3, your backup is install into game partition (backup can not install into linux partition ).
So you can pretty much save everything you got. Reformat for linux and be fine. I was thinking about doing the samething but didnt want to lose everything...

Yea.. I don't think backing up using PS3's utility backs up the Linux partition, just the PS3's. But yes you can definitely put in a new hdd, create a Linux partition and then use the restore ability to copy all your files from the backup file onto your new hdd.
If you restore a backup to a different PS3, you'll lose anything that was authorized for that PS3 only (downloaded games, PSN video store, etc). But switching hard drives to the same PS3 is always fine. Note that when you restore a backup, it will reformat the GameOS partition before restoring onto it.
Has there been any work done on formatting and transfering files on a PC? Obviously you'd need the original drive for reference, but it _should_ only be a matter of doing a bit-by-bit copy and change the meta data field(s) referencing disk size.
Unless the PS3 uses larger block sizes for larger drives, then you have to start understanding more of the partition and filesystem schema.
