PS3 2.5'' HDDs are user-upgradeable with off the shelf parts!

Interesting news. Seeing how <100GB HDDs are fairly cheap on ebay, this is good news for those who end up with a $500 PS3.

Kaz i believe announced this a while ago, i think at TGS. It is also confirmed that it will support external HDs if you dont wish to take apart the system so soon. But i believe he said that its not too hard to take it out..simply open and pull or something.

You probably wont "Open" the machine. You will more then likely only have to dis assemble a small part (which they fully intended on you having acess too) to get at the hard drive.

Interesting, interesting indeed. Me wonders how the hard drive will be formatted, hopefully not in some stupid non PC compatablie format.

i watched games spots' "on the spot" episode where they had a ps3 in house and were tossing questions to the sony rep showing it off. they asked him about the hdd upgradability and he made some confusing comment about how sony would rather you use usb connected devices instead of switching the hard drive, and i think he said something about the hdd being hard to change.

this only make me realize that i am probably more capable than he is at doing his own job. there has been lots of news to support "2.5" sata standard drives are easy to change in the ps3" and the presenter almost couldn't make a sentence.

on this topic, i'm trying to research 2.5" sata ram based drives. there are several companies that make them. one up to 128 gigs. imagine having 128 gigs and not having any moving parts or latency. the ps3 would be even faster. no word on if these drives would actually fit or if the cost would be worth it. but it would still be really cool. [heck even sony is selling computers with the ram based storage devices[$$$] in japan, i guess you never know]

Sata 2.5'' HDDs still have moving parts and latency. They are just like their pata bretheren pretty much (except for all the SATA exclusive goodies).

I believe he is talking about RAM hard-drives. instead of disks, they use solid state ram chips & are much faster.

From what can be told (from images), on the bottom of the console (while its vertical), in the middle of it, there is a 2.5 HDD sized slot, for a HDD + possible plastic caddy.

I am going to bet 1-2 screws, it pops out, very easy to upgrade, but I suppose we will see in about 3 weeks , eh?

I have an adaptor to let me connect 2.5'' drives normally. I wonder if a reverse adaptor exists that would allow normal sized drives to be used. Imagine a 400 gig in your PS3, it could kill xbox1 in awesomeness. Also, doesn't using your own HDD make the platinum bundle pretty much useless?
