I have 500 GB "internal", so the limit definitely is not 320 GB.
What you're probably thinking of is the largest 2.5" SATA drive on the market is currently 320 GB (or was the last I checked anyway, excluding Hitachi's non-standard sized 500 GB).
You can work around that issue by running a cable from your PS3's SATA port to a larger 3.5" SATA drive outside, hence it's internal to the PS3 eventhough the drive is physically external.
For the OP, I'm not sure that anyone but Sony knows the exact limits, but I'm willing to bet it's a 64-bit number, in which case it's very big.
BTW, there is a significant difference in speed between SATA and USB 2.0. I'm not sure exactly how that translates when doing BD dumps since you're likely limited by the speed of the BluRay reader, but I would imagine it's faster. Maybe it's worth testing and posting back here so others will know?
