I think this may work, but you may have the trouble I'm having at the moment. I think I might need to have an external power source for my 3.5" Hard Drive, because at the moment the PS3 complains that its the wrong hard drive.

Any ideas about how to do this external power source? Preferably from an AC power supply, because it'd be such a hassle having to connect it to a PC each time I needed to use it.

I bought a Sata Male>Female extension and a seagate 750gb (7200.11) I plugged the cable and the HDD then switch on the ps3 and the ps3 doesn't recognize anything... the hard drive doesn't start.

So i tried with an external sata box the plugged the cable, switched on the ps3... it asked me to format so i said yes then after format completed pressed x to restart... and the ps3 restarted well but there is no xmb on the screen only the 3 animated lines !

why it doesn't work ? when I plug the original HDD all is ok. any solution ?

thanks !

Edit: I test with my 500gb and all is working perfectly. For an external sata hdd try the LC POWER EH-35BSII with a custom sata male femele cable !

thanks

Can I connect my external hard drive already formatted to FAT32 to the PS3 without reformatting again? I have tons of music on it and dont want to lose them.

There really isn't a buffer requirement... the internal drive of the PS3 only has an 8MB buffer to my knowledge. 16MB buffer is kind of standard on 3.5" hard drives now.

I think I'm going to wait until larger notebook drives come around. I don't feel like having an extra appendage to my PS3, its quite large as it is I have that 750GB Seagate mentioned in a drive kit for my PC, mostly for backup purposes. I'm doing find with my 60GB, except its starting to get full now that I'm ripping my favorite movies to x264 and dropping them on there.
