IIRC, it depends on how you formatted the external Hard Disk!

Saw one of those Maxtor (err, Seagate) 1.5TB USB externals (C01W015) for $599 at BB and was super close to buying one.

Anyone know if the PS3 will see 1.5TB's?

Take it further...

If you have the money why stop with a single disk?

This is the cheapest two-disk eSATA DAS with an embedded RAID controller (RAID 0 or 1) that I've found so far.

This would work and with drives at 750GB you could have roughly 1.5TB directly bootable to the PS3 and not through USB. The easiest way to hook it up would the following items.

You could even use a larger enclosures with embedded RAID controllers. Sans Digital makes 5 disk boxes with single SATA channels. The thing with th embedded RAID controller the RAID array remains transparent to the PS3 and it sees it a a large single drive.

One reason I was interested in the maxtor setup was because they are using the 750 seagates which I cant even buy 2 750's separately for less than $600. Seems worth it to buy just to strip the 2 drives out, then use your strategy bmg, thanks for heads up.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB, SATA II NCQ, 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

It looks like Newegg has (as always) dropped the price of this drive. It is currently going for $289!

well i have a 250gb ide drive and a 250gb 250 sata2 drive... i cant just stick the sata drive in the ps3 right? dont think so since \i prob have a 3.5 desktop model...

anyways i may eventually upgrade to a bigger drive on my pc so i may stick that sata 2 or ide drive on my ps3 with an enclosure...

Are there a list of companies or places that sell the larger enclosure with these embeded controllers? I'd hope to see some feedback about the enclosure's performance in a PS3.

Has this been done to PS2s with IDE?

Thanks

Unless you want a messy looking hard drive hanging out by your PS3, just get a generic drive enclosure that has it's own power supply. You can then put/try any size drive you like. Of course this would be a USB 2.0 connection unless you buy a sata enclosure. The most common you will find at any computer parts store is going to be USB/Firewire. I haven't had a chance to try mine because I've been so busy building a new PC to keep up with my work load. I spent all that money on PS3 in December, so I've had a hard time choking down $1500 to build a new PC for my workstation. It will be worth it when I'm finished though.

I purchased a 320gb Barracuda on eBay for $80.00 shipped and I'm going to be looking for another one soon to hook up to the PS3. If you don't mind the external drive enclosure, you can find some sweet deals on eBay. WD400 I've seen for around $115 new. I like the idea of going with a 3.5" drive though. If you decide you don't need that much space on your PS3, you can always use it in a PC. Upgrading hard drives on laptops is not as common, hence the price difference.
