I know the adapter works because, I tried hooking up the 20gb 2'5 HDD that came with PS3 and it works fine through the adapter. Does anyone know why this hard drive doesn't work?
i dont have a ps3, but from what ive read, the ones that work transfer at 3gb/s, this one does not. and it's 3.5" compared to the 2.5" it should be.

You sure about that? How come the 750gb HDD works without an different power source.

It's not exactly BS, but you can use a standard desktop 3.5 hdd thru use of an sata connector, I guess. Don't know really, cause I'm using an external drive w/enclosure usb 2.0. To me, having the drive outside of the drive bay open like that is kinda messy. I recommend a external drive usb 2.0. And yes, they will work absolutely fine on the ps3 especially if you want to run movies with the new method of playing blueray movies off of the HDD.

This definitely sounds wonderful, being able to install a 750GB hard drive into a PS3 and run things like MP3's, saves and that from it... I take it that when the 1Terabyte hard drives come out in the near future, there's a possibility that they might work in the PS3 or would 750GB be a theoretical maximum?

I just got my 500 gb to work using a external usb case to power it and just connecting a male to female sata cable to the box. after formatting it says i have only 414gb free so i recommend the bigger the better. on a pc i get 465gb free if formated for nfts.

How come you get less space if you place a 500GB SATA HD into a PS3 than if you put it into a PC? I take it that it's to do with the way that it's recognised within the PS3 or something else...

I have plugged in a Toshiba external hdd via USB but it dosn't show up in menu anywhere the only thing that happens is the busy icon in the top corner for few seconds. Aynone know of PS3 not liking certain usb drives? Does PS3 only support SATA via USB ?
