Can you confirm that it does infact reformat your HDD? (the e3 downgrader)
it deletes absolutely nothing
when you update/downgrade and turn off service mode the ps3 starts the initial firmware setup - once its done it will ask you to restore the previous data.
If its a slim it will more than likely format your hdd as some of the data is stored within the hdd whereas if its a phat you will be ok. Something to do with a larger NAND storage on the older phat consoles.
I've just ordered myself an E3 card reader. The plan is:
Downgrade to 3.15 & install Ubuntu 8.10
Run the exploit (XorHack kit) & dump the hypervisor
Fish out the dongle master key
