Unless there are models of PS3 that can't read them it indicates that the features indicated are not correct.
I noticed that also. But it CAN read dual layer, almost all commercial dvds are DL. I don't watch dvds very often in mine, but I just checked Mallrats dvd on my pc, it is 7.78 gb. Played in 60gb PS3.

    All PS3's can read:
    • Dual Layer Dvds
    • Single Layer Dvds
    • CD-R
    • CD-Rw
    • All other forms of cd/dvd/bluray media

Not all ps3's can play ps2 games.

I think it's about recorded media bit-setting/book type. The default settings are -R DL and +R DL respectively, but on some drive you can write them as DVD-ROM.

yes the firmware is encrypted.. it was dumped from multiple drives some time ago via linux i think.. but without a decryption key.. please someone correct me if im wrong!

the only thing i can see this being useful for is getting correct game dumps.. i think someone mentioned the boot flag area of the disk that cant be accessed with a normal drive.. but i would imagine you would need to RE the firmware to figure out how to make the drive read those sectors.. BUT.. the firmware is encrypted so thats out..

    Cool

Maybe this will lead to the ability to flash the drive like in an xbox.
