They need to be the same size, as thus far using two different size drives generates errors.

two 60gb hdd's from different manufacturers possible?

two 60gb hdd's from different manufacturers possible?

hi there!

i have a 60gb ps3 and a macbook with a 60gb harddisk. as i want to upgrade the macbooks harddrive, i am wondering if the harddisks for that "swap-trick" will just have to match in size or if they need to be exactly the same hardware, say two samsung 60gb hdd's?

also, i was wondering about this hybrid-fw and what makes it hybrid. i am on fw 2.35 so i think i am out of luck for testing this, but i came up with a theory while reading that streaming is only possible after reformatting the drive if went back to retail-firmware.

as we know for now is that the debug-fw will install and the debug-options appear in the xmb. maybe the functionality is disabled because the hdd is still formatted for a retail-ps3?

it seems that the ps3 is storing some needful information on the hd if streaming would be unusuable, so does anybody with a hybrid-fw has ever tried to reformat the hd while in debug-fw? i think it may be possible that the hd of a debug-ps3 uses a different layout, for example a small partition for a memory-dump or something else that may be useful to debug a game.

my english is not the best, so to clear out what i mean i state it again in a simple manner:

retail-fw + retail-hdd = retail-ps3
debug-fw + retail-hdd = hybrid-ps3
debug-fw + debug-hdd = debug-ps3

can anyone check that to verify if the blocker is not the hd?

thanks and greets,

herogen

Or better yet try to reformat while in hybrid-debug and update the firmware with a debug firmware, i know there must be tons of errors in the way but, maybe repeating the steps after the errors may get you somewhere no?

i mean, try to reformat in hybrid-debug, if you get an error try to upgrade to full-debug, then try to reformat again and again try to update see what happens?

well this thread grew pretty fast so heres a question to see if it has been tried yet.

upgrade to 1.80 debug using the hdd swap method, then once installed do a regular FW upgrade to 2.15 debug without doing a hdd swap. I haven't seen anyone post on this yet if they have tried it that way. then we can see if were truly on a debug firmware and not too muffed up with some junk 1/2 working/nonworking frimware.

The down side to this all is people without an infectious chip are kinda screwed once you test with 1.80 debug and then 2.15 debug, if it all doesn't work out then we essentially lose one tester for this method =(

For example you can dump most reatil firmware with infectus and run a patch to make them 1.0 for downgrading to aonther version maybe same could be done with the debug firmware see what is differnt and patch it to work but it will porably be a while to see if this is posible im sure the devs are considering this.

this could also be tested with a ps3 in demo-mode to get it into retail-mode

This might be a stupid question but mabe the problem is within the system format, would it be possible to get a dev hd image to run without it formatting itsself? also would us unlucky 40 gig owners get backward compatibility when this is sorted ?

thanks and keep up the hard work !!

Updating from the "hybrid" to a pure DEBUG firmware using just a DEBUG pup on a thumbstick does not work. It gives "Data type not supported". Same error you would get trying to update to a DEBUG firmware from RETAIL firmware I believe.

Here is a comment made by NDT (A NAND Patcher dev):

The downgrader is working already but if we release it Sony will patch the hole and all will become useless.

We won't release it until it's needed, i mean that we will release it if an exploit will be found in a previous version of firmware to allow all the ppl that have upgraded to do the downgrade.
