When updating via the network while on this firmware, does it update to retail firmware or a newer debug firmware?

A bit premature question, as the first step is to get the Debug Firmware functions working on a retail console. If that happens, and if you were to use the method CJPC currently does (refer to PS3 Backup Launcher article on the Site News right margin) then yes, they would need to be patched to run... but everyone could patch their own on their "full" Debug PS3 so it isn't an issue really.

CJPC will confirm this, but from memory there isn't a Network FW Update for the PS3 Debug/TEST consoles, only retail (US, EU, etc) and Demo PS3 consoles have that option.

I think this post made by kraken sums things up nicely:

Debug consoles exist such that developers can test their unfinished (and thus unsigned) games. These debug consoles have a different firmware than retail units, and now this firmware has been extracted and analyzed. Since CJPC has written a loader for internal and external HDDs and has successfully ran it on his debug PS3, this means that a console running a debug firmware can run both homebrew code and backups.

My PS3 runs with 2.17. Will there be a method for me to change my PS3 from 2.17 to a TestFW?

Is it possible to change the PS3 from 2.17 to 1.80 DebugFW? I don´t think so.

Isnt it possible to downgrade on debug firmwares? If so, if you do this trick to 2.15 and then downgrade to 1.80, maybe that will create a "full" install?

As attached below, if this proves to be useful beyond non-functioning menu options then you would wait for the following PS3 Debug Firmware to be leaked and use that to 'update' your retail PS3 console.

If you check the Site News (or previous posts) you will see the resident PS3 Devs are awaiting those with the Infectus Mod installed to test the 'downgrade' approach using this "HDD Swap" method.

I would have thought it would be done in reverse.
Use this method to go to debug 1.80 then update normally to debug 2.15.
This eliminates the need to downgrade

I'm not sure we mean the same thing, but I'll wait and see what happens.

Hi guys, great finding so far!

So the hybrid ps3 has the debug menus but no function behind them... What about the hardware? Is a debug unit really exactly the same as a retail one or are there any firmware differences on some of the other component on the board?
