HD Advance

Okay I've not got a PS2 as of yet. I know I've got to get the old style PS2 to use HD advance to use the internal HDD. Anyway my question is this:

Is it possible to set up a file server so I can transfer PS2 games to the console direct using a network. I want to have a central location for my PS2 and Xbox games. However I don't think it is as I've noticed that you need to take the HDD out to back up the HDD using the PC.

Another question is, I'm not too keen on buying a PS2 second hand. Anyone know where I can buy the old shape PS2's new?

Last question. Whats the max size of hdd the HD Advance can handle?

I've seen sites selling them with upto 400gb. If thats the case will HD Advance work with Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 300GB 6B300RO ATA-133 16MB?

get a new PS2 and a PS2 extreme disk

then you can use a USB hard drive with your PS2

Thats a lot slower though. I've read that the usb is so slow that some intro's are choppy using usb.

Yes, you can transfer game images to the HDD over the network. This capability is provided with HDL_Dump (PC side) and the HDLD_Svr (PS2 side). This method is slower than hell, so it's productivity may not be desirable.

The "official" maximum supported size is 200 GB. The "unofficial" word is that the Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB ATA/133 16MB 6B300R0 works perfectly.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Theres a lot to take in for a newbie like me. My heads still spinning from all the xbox stuff I had to learn to get that chipped.

At least with HD Advance I don't have to chip a ps2.

You didn't have to chip your Xbox either, there are software exploits that let you run unsigned code on the Xbox. I did it manually and it was really easy. Even if you're scared to do it manually, there are lots of auto installers that will do the job for you. You could have saved yourself a little money....

As far as buying an old PS2 new, that's not likely to happen, however, I recommend that you buy a PS2 with the model number 39001-50001. Those ones are less likely to have any disc reading errors.

And don't install games over the network. You can do it, but in the time that it would take for you to install one large game, you could have put the PS2 HDD in your comp and installed 2 or 3 games.

I knew about the exploits I just prefered having a chip in. Thanks for the info on the model numbers. I'll keep an eye out for one.
I'll be getting it on Friday so I'll order HDAdvance then.

I download the new ver. of HDadvance. It works good, but just black and white. How can i fix it en coleurs. Please Help.

If you don't mind spending the extra bit of money then get a USB external drive kit. They transfer at like 10-20mb's instead of the .9mb it takes on the network. As long as your computer has a 2.0usb port on the computer.

I mean I am pretty laszy, but it is only two screws and slide it out....

Well I would prefer to have a central file server with the games on it, alas this isn't possible.

I guess I'll just have to keep taking the hdd in and out.
