If there's a mess of wires in the system then the first step is to remove the previous install. Clean it good then start over. The key to a successful install is to make it neat and tidy. The best tools to have for cleaning are a solder sucker and a de-soldering braid.

I've never really counted the number of wires ever when installing. Just make sure every point labeled in the diagram is wired to the chip. For all other points just ignore them.

Use the correct wires too. All wires should be 30 AWG except for ground (and maybe power). Ground should be 20AWG. Although if you study installs online you may notice some people just twisting two pieces of 30AWG wire together for ground.
