Not really. If memory serves me correctly, the Sega Masters System and NES were around the same, the SNES and Genesis were around the same, and the N64 and PSOne were around the same (for most of their life... granted PSOne lasted longer than N64 mind you). It was only with the GC that we saw Nintendo trying to get the upper hand with a noticeably cheaper (monentary-wise) console...
