Not sure how to create ext3 filesystem w/o having a partition... suggestions?

Understand ntfs is not working correctly. Has anyone been able to fix this, or is there a workaround? Ntfs support is huge... ps3 is 1000mb, that's double the transfer rate of usb 2.0. Sure fat32 works, but then you have to transfer the files to pc, etc., which is an extra step & time.

What can be done now to get ntfs backups fixed?

Edit: ext3 issue solved. However transfer times via usb 2.0 are ridiculously long. What is the fastest method for transferring the rip/iso from ext drive to pc?
