All changing the booktype does is get the DVD+R (changing the booktype only applies to DVD+R/W/DL products) past the initial boot phase. If your DVD+R/W/DL wasn't booting before you set the booktype to DVD-ROM and it worked afterwards, you just saw the only tangible benefit it can give you. Of course, there is no penalty to always using the DVD-ROM booktype, so I would set my buring program to auto burn with DVD-ROM booktype enabled...
