Video: Sony Confirms Netflix Will be Disc-free on PS3 Next Week
Several months ago we reported that search and discless functionality were being added by Netflix, and today Netflix VP of Product Development Greg Peters has confirmed that the online video service will be going disc-free on Sony's PS3 entertainment system next week.
To quote: If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on your PS3, here is the news you've been waiting for: starting Monday, October 18 you'll be able to instantly watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console.
In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user interface that brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts.
There is even more good news for PS3 owners: starting on Monday you'll be able to instantly watch some movies and TV shows in 1080i 1080p high definition, listen to Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, and view an increasing portion of our content library with subtitles.
This will bring the home theater experience right to your living room and make instantly watching movies even more enjoyable. Here's a [Register or Login to view links] from Netflix and Dolby with details.

It doesn't suck, but yea the streaming lineup mainly consists of older movies. They just inked a new deal though with the movie studios to get the new releases faster than they were getting them before. This means they will get them before they go to HBO, Starz, etc.
Apparently, when you try to start Netflix with the disc today (Oct. 18th) a message pops up and indicates that the disc will stop working in 31 days. You are given an option to update or continue and have the system remind you later.
