Sony's PlayStation 3 is Closing in on Selling 23 Million Units

Sony's 2008 results, in the fiscal-year ending March 31st 2009, show that the company sold 10.06 million PlayStation 3's for the year, up 10 per cent from a year earlier.

When adding fiscal-2007's numbers (9.12 million) and fiscal-2006 launch sales (3.61 million), the PlayStation 3 is closing in on 23 million units sold (shipped) worldwide, which it is expected to surpass when April 2009 sales are included.

The company predicts that the console will sell 13 million units during this fiscal-year. This increase is either extremely optimistic, or presumes a price cut, new model, or killer software.

The PSP also saw increased sales at 14.11 million, up from 2007's 13.81 million. PlayStation 2 hardware and software sales were down significantly and the company expects to sell 3 million less in 2009 than in 2008.

Sony's 2008 fiscal results reveal an annual loss of 98.9 billion yen (£685.20 million/$1.04 billion), with losses continuing in the gaming division but tapered by the PlayStation 3's success.

sony could make it a lot more if some one could find out how to make it play backups, thats why the psp and wii sell so well.

This is great news for the PS3, more features through firmware updates, like the new video service, a new bundle/colour model, added to their great line up of games this year and japan exclusives/world exclusives, i think it will be better this fiscal year.

They should reach their 13 million target with the release of FFXIII early in japan, uncharted 2, god of war 3 etc, those games alone will convert a lot of people from other platforms, and especially older ps2 gamers into the next generation of consoles.

If they had had more than 100,000 launch units, they would have sold a lot more in Japan at the beginning, look at the population of Japan, and they only stocked 100,000 for launch? They'd have sold $$$$$$ a LOT more.

They need to address in-game music too, microsoft have only patented the method in which code runs to play custom soundtracks in game, surely theres a loophole around this. But i dont think this would sell more.

External power supply, smaller board n cpu/gpu, slim bd drive, and a slim model would sell a lot.

I said a few months ago, if they did something as simple as bring out more colour choices or a laser etched model, or bundle, like a FFXIII model, or a green ps3 with uncharted 2 bundle, they'd sell like hot cakes.
