Following up on the PS3 Firmware v4.31 update, today Sony has officially released PlayStation 3 System Software update v4.40 with details below.

Download: [Register or Login to view links] / [Register or Login to view links] / [Register or Login to view links] by MorozzNL / [Register or Login to view links] by hellsing9

While there is no official changelog available yet, it is a required (mandatory) update although nothing appears to be different from the previous firmware revision on the surface.

However, Sony's [Register or Login to view links] notes new support for a particular NFC reader, the [Register or Login to view links], has been added alongside improved system stability.

For those unaware, it's a USB [Register or Login to view links] (NFC) device that reads contact-less IC cards which has been out in Japan, Europe and America since last year.

To quote, roughly translated: The main features updated in version 4.40
    • I corresponding to (RC-S380 Sony Corporation products) IC card reader / writer PaSoRi non-contact.
    • [Closed Captions] has been added as a feature under (Video Settings).
    • The system software to improve the stability of the operation.

    Update: Official Sony 4.40 Changelog:
    • System software update 4.40 will allow users to download content purchased from our online store to their PS3. This feature is not available yet and will be activated in May 2013. Keep an eye on eu.playstation.com for a detailed guide explaining how to make the most of this feature.
    • System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

    Games
    • The wireless stereo headset (CECHYA-0080 / CECHYA-0086) and the stereo headset (CECHYA-0088) now support PlayStation 2 Classics that have been downloaded from PlayStation Store.

Extracted PUP details: By the filenames it seems that they are also pushing a new Blu-ray firmware to perhaps block the ODE.

From bubba: 3K3y is working on 4.40. Woot they didn't stop them.

From Sony PS3 hacker Cyberskunk: You know any of you guys can pull this fw apart.. They did not change any keys.. even in the core..

PSN passphrase has not changed either.. So just change the build number and version number in your spoof files and of course the index.dat if you want to connect. If you unpack it you can just grab the files out of it.. For CEX grab these files...

    index.dat.swp
    version.txt.swp
    vsh.self.cexsp

    On your ps3 rename...

    vsh.self to vsh.self.bak
    index.dat to index.dat.bak
    version.txt to version.txt.bak

Using FTP or filemanager copy the new files over to the PS3 remembering to remove the .swp and .cexsp extentions. OR Just wait a bit while i finish updating the Version Spoofer for other firmwares..

From eussNL: FW 4.40 adds support for RC-S380 (a Sony NFC reader) and system stability stuff.. its firmware for new drive model 0xC (ps3devwiki.com/wiki/Bluray_Drive_Firmware#Firmware_Revisions), an update for the 0xA - not for the rest no syscon updates, no key changes, nothing that prevents downgrading either.

Use devmount (can be enabled in multiman or used separately) for above mentioned files named as:
    • index.dat.swp as /dev_mount/vsh/module/index.dat
    • version.txt.swp as /dev_mount/vsh/etc/version.txt
    • vsh.self.cexsp as /dev_mount/vsh/module/vsh.self

    Question

    Sponsored Links
Just tried to update my trophies on my Rebug 4.30.1 PS3, and it's saying there's a new OFW update out, checked on my OFW PS3, and low and behold there is, 4.40, so no more online on naughty PS3 for me for a while, I guess all new games are going to be resigned to 4.40 as well now, just gotto wait for a new 4.40 CFW or is there a spoofer that will allow me to get online and update my trophies? I'm not interested in playing online.

    Yes its Official

Have to wait a few days until devs check out the 4.40 OFW and come out with new CFW or spoofers.

Hi, I am not a CFW user, so I updated my PS3 once the update came out (3 hours ago or so), since then I have issues for updating my games, my procedure was as follow:

Use Another New Update Software v1.9 for tracking updates with the IDs, then copy the links to download them with PSN DM 3.60, then transfer to PS3 and install.

This procedure worked like a charm (specially with large updates, 500 mb up due to my not-so-good internet connection) btw, yesterday downloaded PSASBR 1.10 patch and today when wanted to install it I was asked to update the FW, I did it but when the patch started to "transfer" it said it was to take 3 hours and my laptop wasn't transferring anything, tried with PS3 Proxy Server and checking the log tab after the redirect entry came this one:

I never saw that entry before (as far as I remember), but that only happens with patches (updates), with games PSN DM is still working, so I am wondering if it was due the 4.40 update or anything else.

The last time I updated a game was Music Unlimited (not a game actually but an app hehe) last week using PSN DM 3.60 so this is new

I wonder if someone has this same issue as well, or is just me and if not, maybe someone could find an explanation hehe. My PSASBR update is 2 hours left to finish..... hahahaha

You shouldn't have to update, I'm on 4.30OFW and going online. You need to use a proxy server, so you can spoof the ps3-updatelist.txt.

Hi, I'm new here. Actually been lurking for a while but never posted. I have a question about this 4.40 update. Is the update linked here for retail kits or Test kits? If it's retail, has a comparable update for the Test kits come out yet?

    Thanks!
