Sony Files Patent for Adapter to Make PS3 Backwards Compatible
According to Siliconera.com (linked above), Sony Japan has officially filed a http://storage.siliconera.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/WO2010095400A1.pdf for an adapter to make PS3 backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles.
To quote on the PS2 to PS3 adapter patent: "Japanese http://gigazine.net/index.php?/news/comments/20100914_ps3_ps2_adapter/ are buzzing about a patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan for a new generation to previous generation console adapter.
We checked the Japanese Patent database to verify and a patent indeed exists.
A schematic of the proposed adapter (200) shows the device has its own processor, a DVD decoder/emulator, sound processor, and graphic processor."
so no.. instead of buying a ps2 to play ps2 games. You will buy and.. wait for it.. PS3.2 to play ps2 games on ps3.. really smart of them.. lol.
As you can see in the patent. Its basically a ps2 without a DVD drive. So you put your game ins PS2. It routes all data from dvd to the ahem.. PS3.2 and it plays your ps2 games.. upscaled via ps3 hypervisor...
PS2 games with trophy support and downloadable in the store -> Great !
I seriously doubt there will be any trophy support at all - the same situation like with current PS1 classic / PSP games and / or PS1 + PS2 DISC based games ...
They will just try to milk users by re-seling them the digital copies at full whack.
