Sony CEO States PS3 Manufacturing Costs Reduced By 70%

The CEO and executive VP has revealed that the manufacturing costs of the PS3 have dropped by a massive 70 percent.

The revelation came during an overseas investors following Sony's Q1 2009 financials.

To quote: During a conference call for overseas investors following Sony's Q1 09 financials, Nobuyuki Oneda Sony Corp's CEO and Executive Vice President has revealed that manufacturing costs of the PlayStation3 have dropped by 70%.

"The cost reduction since we introduced the PS3 is very substantial and this is on schedule," Oneda-san replied when asked about manufacturing costs.

"We don't disclose how much of the PS3, specifically the cost deduction was achieved during the past two years. But that is on schedule."

70% is a big slice thats agreed, its a shame that the customers haven't seen any of this, shame on sony!

The price will not drop 70%, they want to actually start making a profit from sales alone I am sure. 70% is quite large and this would seem to prove all the rumors about the pricedrop being imminent. If they can drop the price $100 and still being making some profit from sales, they would be golden.

never expected the retail price to drop buy 70% but considering they were prepared to sell the ps3 at a loss at the very beginning, which now obviously is not the case, they could still drop the price and still be profitable considering their previous position.
