Sony ACGi '09 Document Reveals PS3 OS Footprint Slash to 50MB

Today PlayStationUniversity.com (linked above) reports that a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe [Register or Login to view links] [PDF] has made its way to the Internet from the All-Russian Conference on Game Industry (ACGi) 2009.

It reveals, among other interesting things, that the PS3's OS footprint has again been slashed down to 50MB in the latest PS3 Firmware revision.

As mentioned previously, back in PS3 Firmware 1.80 the PS3's memory footprint was reduced to 74MB.

The document also outlines PlayStation Development Resources, Architecture of the PlayStation 3, Case Studies for both PSP / PS3 and Advanced Programming... definitely a good read at 86 slides long!

FWIW, the OS footprint hasn't changed in quite a long while (way before 2.80, IIRC). It's just that this is the first time the XDR/VRAM usage by the OS has been mentioned publically.

Gotta wonder how many features they pulled this time. When the slim came out they got rid of the "install otheros" feature and killed the linux support.

    Wink

This has nothing to do with the install size its still 130mb+ this has to do with the amount of ram the ps3 uses, and as you can tell since 1.8 they have added a lot of features including in game xmb! [side not the xbox at last report uses 32 mb].

So maybe this has to do something about the in-game voice chat since the ps3 now can use more spare ram?

    what do you say?

Really, who cares? Very, VERY few people used it anyway and it's not like you could do a whole lot with it.

Besides, they added bitstreaming of HD audio formats on the slim. Which imo is a far greater feature than Linux.

I do. The idea of a slim form factor pc is extremely desirable. Seriously, who are you to decide what features are useful? Furthermore, I'd be delighted to learn where you got your statistics, and specifically what constitutes "very, very few". I'd be shocked if you didn't pull that statement right out of your behind.
