Rumor: Sony Rep Reveals PS3 Backwards Compatibility Plans

    Sponsored Links
Today TheGameHeadz.com (linked above) reports that a Rep revealed Sony's PS3 backwards compatibility plans to them at a recent press event.

While they didn't reveal their informant's name, a few months ago a patent for an adapter to make PS3 backwards compatible was uncovered.

To quote: "It was clear from our conversation that Sony likes the idea of backwards compatibility, but hadn't come to a conclusion until recently, on how to incorporate it.

The decision Sony finally came to is the one already in play, HD remastering.

"Remastering didn't come up until about two years ago. For a developer, remastering in HD took a moderate amount of time and effort to achieve, and with the right title it could be very successful. Once we noticed the benefits of HD remastering, the decision was made to use God of War 1 & 2 as the test for the market, and they delivered.

The God of War Collection had reached almost a million copies sold just after the holiday. Shortly aftter that Activision, EA, UbiSoft, Konami, and SquareEnix were all on board to issue ReMastered Edition of their best Playstation 2 Games."

He went on to say doing backwards compatibility through HD remastering is best for gamers, developers, and the PlayStation 3.

Gamers get to enjoy their favorite games in HD, with trophy support, remastered games fall under the licensing for the PlayStation 3 and are considered a PS3 title, and developers can reap a return on games they develop years ago.

Be prepared to play your favorite PlayStation 2 classics in Stereoscopic 3D, HD, and in digital 7.1 surround sound."

So their plan, based on this article, is just to reissue the best PS2 games in a PS3 compatible format, with maybe a few graphic touches and trophies to make it a little better.

That sounds good, until you realize only a small fraction of the PS2 games everyone has or had played will ever be remastered for the PS3. On top of that, you have to buy the game again, which doesn't sound very pleasant for people who already own the original PS2 titles.

If this is really Sony's plan, then it's mostly just a joke to milk old games, just like with the PSN classic releases of the PS1 games.

Don't let them fool you, this is just a way for them to make more money from the consumer instead of letting them play the games they already bought.

I feel very cheated by this tactic, so I hope those remastered releases get backed up.

Proud owner of the god of war collection and may I say its among the best PS3 games I own. Im already anticipating buying the ICO collection next year (even though I have a jailbreak device) because the collection to me makes a great collectible (sorry for the redundancy).

Having collections like god of war, ico, kingdom hearts, metal gear, among many other great franchises with trophy support is just breath taking. Thanks sony for a great ride with the ps3, its been one of the best consoles Ive had over the years, retro/current/upgradable to bring the best to the table.

It seems that they just want to sell you the game again to make more money.

Hardly "Backwards compatibility". Pretty much the only console that has backwards compatibility is the Wii, I don't know of any GameCube games that are not compatible.

I do agree that God of War Collection was a great upgrade and I tell just by a glimpse if its the PS2 version or PS3 version (and I am sure alot of others can) but the thing is, what other "big games" did PS2 have? Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts and that's really about it.

I know there are alot of good games on PS2, I have bout 50 or so PS2 games myself, but as far as mile-stone or must have games for PS2, there isn't really that many.

This is exactly what all of the companies want, PS3 wants people to pay again for the games, 360 wants you to buy games on demand for orig xbox titles, and Wii wants you to buy the NES/SNES/Gen games again, it's all about the money, nevermind the customers who shelled out the cash back in the days to make them the company's they are today...

This is total BS. It's not Backwards Compatibility but re-releasing games and making consumers pay again for a game they already own.

If they were so interested in BC then why the heck did they remove it in the first place?
