What's the game about: It's an action-RPG, but streamlined (an "RPG without all the mess," as Liquid Entertainment's Charley Price puts it) so it cuts out the detailed menu screens and puts a larger focus on action than its competitors.

Players control Jason (of "and the Argonauts" fame) and recruit helpers such as Hercules and Atalanta. The game is structured into various islands, and according to Price, each one should contain about two hours of gameplay to give players the option to play the game for a short period of time without feeling overwhelmed.
[Register or Login to view links] action is particularly notable for its context sensitive maneuvers. We saw one scene where a giant boar chased after Jason, and as the boar got close, Jason's sword flashed, triggering the player to hit a button and jump into the air for a slow motion dramatic flip attack that looked far more stylish than we're accustomed to from combat in an action-RPG. On the RPG side, the game uses a "deeds" system where players automatically accomplish tasks as they go, and then can choose to spend these on level-ups. The idea is that the more the gods like you, the stronger you get, so as you accomplish tasks, you take your list of them to the gods and see what they have in their shop for you.
What's new for E3: E3 presented our first look at the game, so apart from the game's title and developer announcement, it's all new.
What we like: Striking a good balance between action and RPG elements can be very challenging for a game of this sort, but we're hopeful Rise of the Argonauts can succeed in that area. The combat looks decent, and the characters and story present a lot of potential.
What we dislike: Currently, the game's too early to say much negative about it, but the character designs and art style seem pretty generic.
