PSN to Get New Revenue From Paid Subscription Service in 2010

    Sponsored Links
Update: [Register or Login to view links] has confirmed that Kaz Hirai stated the current PSN service will remain free, and subscriptions are only for “premium content and services.”

Sony has revealed during their Media/Investor Conference that the PlayStation Network will be getting a new paid subscription service in 2010 alongside non-game content likely to include applications and videos.

According to their [Register or Login to view links] [PDF] a "new revenue stream from subscription" will be generated.

Although few other details exist at this time, the way it is worded sounds like it could possibly be a subscription similar to XBox live on its way to PSN.

To quote: "It is unclear what the new revenue stream subscription might be. Could it be similar to Qore, an optional service, or something more akin to Xbox Live Gold, which is a premium service required to play games online for the Xbox 360?"

I can almost bet a trillion dollars that is when they will include Cross Game Chat and it will be a part of the premium service.

That is quite a scary thought indeed, but I could see Sony doing that too.

    No thank you Sony.

Why would I want to pay for a subscription?

All I want to do (with my PS3) is play video games and watch blu-ray movies.

Sony's "performance" in the customer-service department is piss-poor. Why would I help prop up this flimsy company by subscribing for a fee?

Premium content has never been interesting to me.

I already pay too much for video games.

Tell you what Sony, when it comes to my PS3, or my other interests, the PS3 has the lowest priority. I can do without premium content, and at a certain point, I can do without you or the PS3. It would suck, but you suck more.

    I love my PS3 - I hate Sony.

Fine with me as long as it doesnt affect when i get demos, whether i get into betas, whether I can play online and whether cross game chat works. They can put in pay-per-view etc etc if they want as long as the core isnt affected.

I hope its for the unlimited game downloading for a certain fee. Because if they start charging people to play online alot of people are going to be very mad and start turning away from the playstation. Which would be stupid for sony at this time seeing how they are doing very well and are releasing tons of content. It would suck if they lost all the people they gained. Because once they do they wont get them back.

I too would gladly pay for an unlimited game downloading or renting games from the psn store while your suscription is active.

A bad move if you have to pay to play online, i know quiet a few people who bought one just because online was free.

plus a few peeps with banned xboxs have bought one to play online, they figure that since they have to buy a new console why not buy a ps3 since it allows you to play bluray and has free online stuff.

You never know this could hopefully improve Sony's customer support.

I agree this would be a bad move if they made you pay to play online, imo it's one of the best features they offer which helped me switch over from the 360.

As was updated above, Sony has already confirmed that they will not be charging for online play, so at least that is safe.
