February 8, 2007 - Sony Pictures Entertainment Vice Chairman and Sony Pictures Digital president Yair Landau gave a speech at the D.I.C.E. opening keynote yesterday in Las Vegas, and took the opportunity to announce a new spy-themed MMO from Sony Online Entertainment (SOE).
According to http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12686, SOE is looking to move beyond the fantasy genre of its flagship MMO EverQuest. Landau showed an early preview video of an as-yet-unnamed espionage game set in Prague. A secret agentish dude in a tuxedo, vixen on his arm, uses a .45, drives a hot sports car, and has loads of cool gadgets. The video showed characters shooting each other in realtime and had a booming electronica soundtrack.
"We think this is going to take espionage entertainment to a new level," Landau said. "I'm a big believer in character-driven intellectual property."
SOE is aiming to combine the cinematic aspects of Hollywood with the community aspects of MMOs.
The presentation did not address which platforms this spy-themed MMO would be released for, but SOE had http://ps3.ign.com/articles/722/722437p1.html that its future plans would include cross-platform MMO titles for PC and PlayStation 3.
