We weren't allowed to film the http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161443 of http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3161465 for PlayStation 3 during the Metal Gear 20th Anniversary party happening right this very instant in Japan, but we can bring word that Konami and Kojima Productions will be orchestrating a closed beta to choose 3,000 individuals who will help them test and tweak the online multiplayer game.

So far, the closed beta appears to be for Japanese gamers only, but as this party was completely Japan-centric, no announcements about any potential US plans is hardly surprising. If anything's planned, expect to hear about it in the coming weeks.

For Japan, here's the deal. Registration has http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/mgo_beta/ on the Kojima Productions website, with the closed beta beginning August 20th and ending September 3rd - not exactly a lot of time, especially when we have no idea when MGO is actually being released.
