iD Software: PS4 Will Be the First Next-Gen Console to Market
iD Software's technical director John Carmack predicts that the PS4 will be the first next-gen console out on the market.
He also expects for at least one of the upcoming consoles to ship without support for optical media.
To quote: John Carmack, technical director at iD Software, has predicted that Sony will be the first platform holder to make a move into the next generation of gaming hardware - though he doesn't expect any new machines to be announced in the near future.
"The whole jockeying for who's going to release the first next-gen console is very interesting and pretty divorced from the technical side of things," Carmack told CD-Action, as spotted by Eurogamer's Digital Foundry.
"Whether Sony wants to jump the gun to prevent the same sort of 360 lag from happening to them again seems likely.
"As developers, we would really like to see this generation stretch as long as possible. We'd like to see it be quite a few more years before the next-gen consoles comes out, but I suspect one will end up shipping something earlier rather than later."
I just hope that the "near future" is as far as possible from now because I haven't seen the so called "Big Secret Power" of the PS3 , at least, I haven't seen the phenomena that happened with the PS2, when the first game I played was the "WWE Something " which looked really ugly and was hard to play, but then, one of the last games I played was "Shadows Of The Colossus" which is was the state of the art for the PS2 back then (a really beautiful game).
I'm finding hard to believe that the next console generation will come without optical media support, I mean, the new media formats are the trigger for next generations to come: CDROM (PSOne) -> DVDROM (PS2) -> BDROM (PS3).
Although, it is true that these media are expensive, when new, and kinda slow nowadays (compare to the speed of HDD's) but I guess that time will tell, maybe with these 1 TB memory sticks, things will be a lot more different.

I have 1 thing to say. No ID software, you're wrong. I have a feeling that Microsoft will announce their next console at E3 next year. and by announce I mean actually show a prototype.
The PS3 has a 8 core processor, and each one is 3.2 GHz. That is more powerful then most (Not all) Pc's around today. In fact most gaming computers have 4 cores with 2.4 GHz per core. Meaning that the PS3's processor is already good enough for years to come. Not that processing is everything. But it's good enough to survive way longer then the 360.
