Andrew House Reveals Sony Examines Online Pass for PS3 Titles

    Sponsored Links
President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Andrew House has revealed to [Register or Login to view links] that Sony is currently examining the Online Pass model for first-party PS3, PSP and PSN titles.

Both EA and THQ already use an Online Pass system for their multiplayer titles, allowing publishers to reclaim some money from the used video game market as those buying second-hand will need to purchase an online pass for the multiplayer component of the game.

To quote: "Activision's Bobby Kotick had said his company would like to see a subscription based service, however House seemed to warn against this.

"In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that's something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today - a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles - on the fact that we've removed that major initial barrier to entry," concluded House."

Finally, Sony has already implemented a similar pass system for PSP shooter SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3 in an effort to combat piracy on the PlayStation Portable.

if they start charging for PSN i will sell my ps3, the major reason why 90% of people who bought a PS3 is because of the FREE online play, now if they change that, they will lose all of their business and everyone will switch to xbox, which i will not play.

it means each game will come with a code to play online and you must type this code in. if you want to buy a used copy then you have to purchase a new code from psn to play that game online. Pretty much so people buy new copies instead of buying used games.

I agree with you 100%. not to mention the fact that I already play my modded/flashed 360 for multi-platform games.

since you posted his picture....not to be racist or anything , and/or a little immature/inappropriate, but this Andrew House looks like a freaking queer. I just had to get that out of my system.

I would purchase used games from ebay for half price , generally in the $30 range compared to retail. Now I have to pay for an "online code" just so I can play online!? ..it seems to me like the rich are trying to get richer!

    just some 5 am fun

couldn't help it. they should keep to what they promised with the release of the PS3. if you buy a game and can go online with it, when it's resold or traded why should someone have to pay to use features again? its like buying a used car and having to call chevy for a code to use the navagation system.

    Exclamation

First Activision wanted to raise the price of console games now they want to charge us for playing online?! You'd think they have enough money coming in from their success with the Call of Duty and Guitar Hero series.

servers cost money, now the monthy subscription fee is a joke, but the one time fee for buying a used game is justifiable, the company itself gets $0 from used games, so why should they support those people, its just a loss sale from somebody buying a new title. Last time I checked, companies were in business to make money, and do what ever it takes to make that money. The only way to stop this, is to not buy their products.

The messed up sideeffect of all this used game hate is people turning to piracy. If the used game is going to give you the same game, why not? Then just buy the code for online and enter that if its the only thing needed for online play. Or just ignore getting a code altogether.

Agreed. I have no problem paying a one time free for a used game to play online, or if a developer charges a one time fee to play their games then fine. but once i have to start paying a subscription fee for a game or set of games that i may not even get to play with work and all, no thanks... no thanks.
